The Vest Worn Right
"How the heck do I wear a vest?"
All right, we're going to settle once and for all how to wear a vest. Because we're into the trend, but we don't want to look like we're in an ice-cream parlor singing quartet or crushing on Ellen DeGeneres.
First, purchase a vest that's actually made for women; none of those "vintage menswear" pieces that some smaller dude wore in 1986 during his Culture Club phase.
Next, try a neutral color like black, brown, or tweed. Now, add layers--throw on a long cardigan or scarf to add dimension. (Careful adding a blazer; it can look too suited or matchy-matchy.)
On your bottom half, it's best to opt for a fuller cut pant in a different color or material so you don't look like Denim Barbie at her new mall job. Example: with a brown vest, pair with trouser-cut dark denim. Exception: a black vest with black pants is usually a safe pairing.
Sidenote: You're not Justin Timberlake, so when you wear your vest leave the fedora at home, LINDSAY.
