Great Galveston Hurricane (1900) The most deadliest in U.S. history, it is also the worst natural disaster ever to strike our nation's soil. 8,000 is the number most cited when it comes to casualties, but it could be as high as 12,000, according to some reports. Today, the amount of damage done by the time the hurricane left the U.S. in mid September would cost $99 billion. It is also commonly referred to as the Great Storm.
