34 people were arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning in the small Dutch town of Haren, about 100 miles north of Amsterdam, following a massive riot in which shops were looted and a car was set on fire.
According to police, the rioters were part of an internet campaign called "Project Haren" that tried to capitalize on a young girl's Facebook party invite that she failed to set to private.
"She posted the invitation on Facebook and sent it to friends, who then sent it to other friends and soon it spread like wildfire across the Internet," Groningen police spokeswoman Melanie Zwama told AFP news agency.

The girl cancelled the party, but by then it was too late. Nearly 3,000 people showed up, many of them wearing shirts that said "Project X Haren."
While the makeshift party reportedly started out good-natured, police say a number of people began getting violent, breaking windows and throwing beer bottles at police. 500 police officers were called in to break up the chaos.
Said Mayor Rob Bats, "Scum ran amok in our town."
