Valerie Bertinelli's new memoir Finding It reveals her worry about raising a teenager.

Valerie Bertinelli made a media splash two weeks ago when she stepped to the side of lifelong friend Mackenzie Phillips in Phillips' confession about her longtime affair with her father John Phillips. Now Bertinelli is back with a story of her own, and we get an inside view of co-parenting with ex-husband Eddie Van Halen.

Wolfgang Van Halen was almost 17 when he called his mom for permission to sleep at his girlfriend's house. Valerie's response? Anxiety -- she "wanted to open the fridge and eat everything," according to her latest book.

Bertinelli says her boyfriend, financial planner Tom Vitale, has helped her cope with the stresses of being all things to all people -- career woman, lover, ex-wife, daughter, friend, you name it. One of the biggest challenges she's faced in her middle age is her role as mother to Wolfgang who seems to take after his dad Eddie Van Halen when it comes to, well, girls. In Finding It she describes Wolfgang's reaction to her refusal to let him sleep at his girlfriend's house. "'Mom, let me just talk to Dad about it,'" Bertinelli quotes Wolfgang as saying, to which Bertinelli reacted by saying (in her head), "God only knew what kind of information Wolfie might get from his dad. Getting your sex talk from Eddie Van Halen wasn't recommended in any of the parenting magazines I read."

Later, while backstage at a Van Halen concert, she asked Eddie to give their son the talk.

"Got it," Eddie said. He told his son to treat his manhood and women with kindness and to ignore the cheap girls who just wanted to be with him because he was in a band.

We always wondered how rock stars talked to their kids about sex -- priceless, Eddie Van Halen. Read more about the endearing -- and hilarious -- exchange between this mixed family in Valerie Bertinelli's Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger For Life Without Opening the Fridge, available October 6.
