Why Add Flax Seed to Smoothies?
A Sprinkle of Flax Makes a Difference
Flax seed is one of those things I've been meaning to add to my food, but only recently picked up in bulk. Today I had a look at why it's so good for you, because I really wasn't sure about why it's so popular.
Flax seeds, I learned, are a nutritional powerhouse, which is why we often see them added to health-conscious recipes. They have fiber, antioxidants, and Omega-3 fatty acids, and they also happen to be extremely low in carbohydrates.
The Omega-3s are what really makes flax seeds shine in my mind. Inflammation, which can be caused by low Omega-3 levels in the diet, has been linked to cancer and heart disease. For an easy way to sneak flax into your daily routine, try mixing 2 tablespoons per day into your daily smoothies. You might want to start off with a single tablespoon, due to the high fiber content, but that simple addition can make the nutritional content of your milkshake skyrocket!
Try looking for flax in health food stores or in the dried fruit/nuts/seeds area of your local supermarket.
