Anna Wintour is up in arms about the steep markdowns on designer clothing, and even suggested taking the issue to the White House. The hugely influential editor-in-chief of Vogue was joined by designers Donna Karan and Elie Tahari in bemoaning the markdowns at a town-hall style meeting of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

"Could someone lead a committee that would make ground rules for retailers when the discounting starts, and then all the retailers can agree to it?" Wintour asked. When Diane von Furstenberg, president of the council, said, "that's illegal", Wintour responded: "Is that something we can change? We have friends in the White House now." A Vogue spokesman said Wintour was referring to designated days for retail discounts that countries such as France and the UK have in place. "That may be OK over there," said a New York apparel industry lawyer, Vano Haroutunian. "But here, it sounds like collusion."
