Lance Armstrong, Ivan Basso, Danilo De Luca during Stage 9
Lance Armstrong and Ivan Basso have apologized for the protest that occurred during Sunday's Stage 9 of the Giro d'Italia. The 9th Stage was a 163 km circuit that included 9 laps around narrow, crowded city streets. At the start of Stage 9, the riders protested the route was unsafe, fueled by the previous day's disastrous accident, when Spanish rider Pedro Horrillo Munoz fell 60 meters into a ravine. Horrillo was placed in a medically induced coma while doctors treated head injuries and broken bones. Horrillo has since awoken and doctors are hopeful he will make a full recovery. Earlier that day, riders banded together requesting Sunday's times be annulled due to the dangerous conditions. Danilo De Luca of LPR Brakes stopped at the finish line with 6 laps to go and addressing the crowd, stated "We apologize to the public, but today we do not feel like risking, because the circuit is too dangerous. We shall continue the stage, but we don't want to race at full speed."
