Are The Vampire Diaries a Twilight Copycat?

Vampire overload?

Sure, vampires are quite popular now, but are things getting out of control. We all love the Twilight books and movies (obviously) and True Blood has taken off on the small-screen. So, do we need more vampires on the small screen? The CW says yes.

The newest vampire series is CW's The Vampire Diaries. And according to producers, it's nothing like Twilight or True Blood. Of course, it kind of sounds like a similar story. A vampire falls in love with a human. Hmm where does that sound familiar from?

According to writer and producer Kevin Williamson, "Well, yes, the basic premise is the same, but the show very quickly comes to a fork in the road and goes in a completely different direction." The cast includes teen stars such as Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev.

So, will people tune in? We actually think they will. Lots of young people are obsessed with Twilight and would love to see something similar on the small screen. True Blood is geared to a bit of an older audience and can only be viewed by those with HBO. The Vampire Diaries is on a major netowrk and is perfect for teen viewers.

Are you excited for more vampires? Executive producer Julie Plec explains why lots of us are obsessed with them: "You meet some dark, mysterious, gorgeous guy, and you want to believe that there's so much going on behind those eyes - so much wisdom, so much soul and experience. In real life, that hardly ever happens. You just don't get that. But with vampires, you do. Vampires are like bad boys with brains."

Ahhh. How true is that? We'll probably tune in to check The Vampire Diaries out, but we can't say we won't be missing Robert Pattinson the whole time.
