Ashlee Simpson is Written Off Melrose Place
Say goodbye to Violet
Her big moment of small-screen fame is coming to an end. We figured Ashlee Simpson was probably pulling in some ratings for Melrose Place, but they don't seem to think so and are writing her character of the show.
It sounds like producers want to change the entire tone of the CW's Melrose Place. And that tone does not involve Ashlee Simpson. We're actually a bit sad because we enjoyed watching her in the show. But ratings don't seem to be that great and we're sure Ashlee is getting paid a pretty penny to star.
But the show's executive producers make it sound like it was always the plan to have Ashlee leave after 12 episodes. When questioned, Todd Slavkin answered, "...we felt that once the murder mystery was resolved, the tone of the show was going to shift into a much more fun, romantic, sexy upbeat kind of show, and [her] character would move on."
Huh. We find it interesting that they decided to have a 12-episode murder mystery to open the season and then completely change the feel of the show. It seems to be more likely that they realized the murder plot wasn't getting viewers, so now they're going to try romance and sex instead.
Actor Colin Egglesfield will also be departing with Ashlee. But Slavkin says the two took the news of their departure very professionally. He claims, "They're total professionals and they took it like professionals... When you go into a show you never know what's going to evolve and what the possibilities are. But because they knew ahead of time [that leaving was a possibility], it wasn't a complete shock." But we're sure they're not exactly thrilled by the news.
Ashlee released a statement after the news became public: "Having the chance to play Violet on Melrose Place has been a thrill. Although I always knew her story would come to a final, insanely unpredictable end, playing a creepy, unstable character was something I always wanted to do, so I jumped at the chance. Thanks to the CW and the entire cast and crew of Melrose Place for allowing me this opportunity."
In other Melrose Place news, Heather Locklear has begun filming and they do plan to keep her on the show. We wonder if they couldn't afford both Heather Locklear and Ashlee Simpson?
She certainly is professional and we really do hope she finds work in whatever she wants to do in the future!
