Grab the Jujubees.
Blue cat people from outer space and Jeff Bridges with a guitar lead this week's crop of new releases on dvd. Get yourselves ready for the biggest movie in history, Avatar, and a little Academy Award-winning indie flick, Crazy Heart.
As the biggest money-maker in the history of cinema (earning almost $3 billion worldwide), Avatar is the $300 million 3D scifi epic that ruled the roost at the box office for 7 straight weeks. It is the biggest spectacle ever seen on the big screen, and you'd be crazy not to try and see it from the comfort of your own home.
The film follows a paralyzed ex-Marine, played by Aussie Sam Worthington, who travels to a faraway planet with his mind in the body of an alien. There he encounters the Na'vi, the indigenous people of the fantastic planet Pandora.
Also out this week is the drama Crazy Heart. Jeff Bridges won an Academy Award for his performance as Bad Blake, a has-been country music star who is on a downward spiral of booze and dingy motel rooms. He earns a living playing gigs at small-town bars across the country, never with a home or a family to return to. Then, when a journalist (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal) comes looking for a story, Blake begins to find his music and career revived.
The other new release this week is The Lovely Bones, directed by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame. The movie follows the drifting soul of a young girl after she is brutally murdered, and her grieving parents, played by Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz, as they attempt to solve the crime.
