She's such a doll.

In all her 50 long years, Barbie has been everything from a shopaholic teenager to a Japanese Geisha. And until now, she's never had a live-action, feature-length film. After acquiring the rights from toy-maker Mattel, Universal Pictures has announced a Barbie movie.

There are no details yet on who will be playing the plastic blonde icon, but we do know that the film will be produced by Laurence Mark, whose other movies include Julie & Julia and Jery Maguire.

There's little question that Barbie has been the most popular doll ever. Ever since her debut in March of 1959, Barbie (full name Barbara Millicent Roberts), has captured young girl's hearts with her decidedly adult look and lifstyle.

"Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands," said Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger. "So many representations of Barbie frequent pop culture, but never before has she been brought to life in a motion picture."

According to Barbie general manager and Mattel senior vice-president Richard Dickson, who will executive produce the film, the brand is finally ready for a movie.

"In the last 10 years, Barbie has evolved from a toy into an intellectual property," he said. "We've already had enormous success in the entertainment industry. Barbie has a proven track record in home entertainment, there have been live stage shows, live symphonies and other non-traditional forms of entertainment."

Well, it looks like every little girl in America who grew up with a Barbie doll will finally get a chance to see their role-model on the big screen. But who's going to play the tiny blonde bombshell?

We're thinking someone like Taylor Swift or Olivia Wilde. And with that whole Legally Blonde thing we're guessing Reese Witherspoon is out of the picture.

You got any better ideas?
