Bill Clinton Secures Release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee
Two American journalists that were held in North Korea have been pardoned following a visit on their behalf by former President Bill Clinton. One of them, Laura Ling, 32, is a sister of celebrity journalist and former The View co-host Lisa Ling.
Ling and Euna Lee were jailed on spying charges. They are believed to be returning to the US on Clinton's private jet. Lee and Ling were sentenced to 12 years of hard labour in North Korea for an allegation of illegally crossing into the country's border from China in March. The pair were on-air reporters for Al Gore's San Francisco-based Current TV. Clinton met with them and then leader Kim Jong Il for what were termed wide-ranging, exhaustive talks. The white-haired leader was shown alighting from his jet on news footage, looking dapper and trim. Clinton is the first former American president to travel to North Korea since 1994, when Jimmy Carter was dispatched to secure a suspension of North Korea's nuclear activities. Lisa Ling campaigned actively for her sister and Lee's release. Both women are married.
