What happened to color?

If you were watching the Emmy Awards last night, it's likely you saw a trend on the red carpet. Gone were the bright, fun colors, in order to make way to black, white, and navy blue. We're not complaining because the celebs looked fabulous, but we were kind of missing the pinks, greens, and bright blues. How did the ladies pull off the black, white, and navy?

Was it just us or did you think many of the celebrities at last night's 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards were playing it a bit safe in terms of color palettes? We think most of the ladies looked pretty awesome, but that could be, in part, because not many risks were taken. In fact, the red carpet was filled with tons of black dresses, many white dresses, and way more navy blue dresses than in the past.

We're definitely on board with the navy blue trend and think celebrities like Glee's Lea Michele and and Modern Family's Julie Bowen looked stunning in the color. We think navy blue is the next big thing when it comes to party dresses and big nights out. But, while we have nothing against black dresses, we think there were far too many of them at the awards. Black is generally seen as safe and we're not sure why so many ladies wanted to play it safe last night.

Of course, we think Heidi Klum looked ridiculously amazing in her super short black Marchesa mini dress. Could any other mother of 4 pull off a dress so short and still look completely sophisticated and down-to-Earth? It's like that dress was made for her. And, though it was black, Heidi did take a risk with it with its shortness and sparkle. Plus, she wore a fun, colored necklace.

While we loved Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria's look, we think she could have pulled off the same dress in a much brighter, more vibrant color and stood out a lot more on the red carpet. Kate Gosselin? Well, we get why she might not have wanted to stand out too much. But we were super bored by her black dress.

True Blood's Anna Paquin went the black dress route, but topped it off with an intricate gold armor-like design. While it wasn't our favorite dress, we're just glad she did something to stand out! And Lauren Graham tried to combine the black and white look, but horribly failed. She looked like she's at a college toga party with a sheet wrapped around her!

Then there was the white. Kim Kardashian's long white Marchesa did have an intricate gold and silver neckline that really pulled the dress together and gave it some fun. But Dexter's Julie Benz's one-shoulder white dress did absolutely nothing for us. She looked stunning, but it certainly wasn't any thanks to the dress.

What do you think of this year's Emmy trends? Will we start seeing more black, white, and navy blue dresses everywhere? Or was navy the only color that really stunned this year?
