Blake Lively hit the red carpet this weekend for the Emmys looking ravishing in a cleavage-baring red dress. . .but what about that braid? The Gossip Girl had her locks twisted into a long, messy blond 'do that had some people raving--and others saying "ick!" What do you think?

While I'm personally not a huge fan of the dress-plus-braid combination in this case, I will give points to Blake (and her team) for trying. With many other outfits, that braid would look awesome! If you're craving the same style to pair with flannel and plaid, denim, and minis, here are some tips for you.

*Scrunch with a small amount of mousse, but don't overdo it, or your hair will get matted and hard to manage.

*Don't be afraid of mistakes! Blake Lively's hair had purposefully misplaced hair strands that were worked in and out of the main braid.

*Don't shun hair spray. While many of us don't use it much, you'll probably find that a quick spray along the braid is just what you need to keep the "casual mess" still somewhat under control.

*Slicking your hair back into a high ponytail and then braiding it can add a ton of interest to an otherwise simple look, thanks to the play on textures. Try it out!
