Brad Pitt has reportedly spent $1.5 million on a painting at a European art fair. Pitt appeared at what is billed as the world's leading contemporary art fair at Basel.

He bought a painting entitled Etappe, by avante garde German artist Neo Rauch, said Maike Cruse, a spokeswoman for the fair. Rauch, 49, has been hailed as one of the most widely acclaimed painters of his generation, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His works feature surrealist images with political overtones. The David Zwirner Gallery, in New York, had advertised Etappe as an "enigmatic and dreamlike" representation of a race car being serviced mid-competition.
