'Brothers' Gets Mixed Reviews, Tobey Maguire Praised
Inspired from Homer's The Odyssey.
Bringing a little intensity to your movie theater this weekend is the family war drama, Brothers, starring Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal. Here's what everyone is saying about it.
Based on a 2004 Danish film, Brothers follows the family of an Army captain (Maguire) who goes missing while on tour overseas, and the brother (Gyllenhaal) who begins to take care of the man's wife (Natalie Portman) and children. Things go haywire when the soldier returns home.
Reviews for the film have been mixed so far. Jake Coyle of The Associated Press says the "aspiration of Brothers is noble. But it can't preserve the intimacy of the original film, and the loosened characters slide into cliche."
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Steven Rea, on the other hand, calls Brothers "a heartbreaking film that speaks to the lifelong aftershocks of war, and to the powerful bonds of family and of love."
While the film itself is being debated over, the actors are gaining wide-spread praise. Veteran critic Roger Ebert was particularly impressed with Tobey Maguire's performance. "I've never seen these dark depths in him before," he said.
