Californian Woman Delivers 8 Babies
This takes the term "breeder" to a whole new level.
It's been a while since we had one of these "let's everyone stop and stare at the baby," stories, so why not? This time, instead of "World's Oldest Mom OMG!" it's the lovely tale of a mom and her new baby. I mean babies. Baby x 8.
That's right, an unnamed woman in Southern California gave birth to eight children: six boys and two girls all weighing between 1lb, 8oz and 3lbs, 4oz.
It gets crazier. In a scene that seems perfect for a Robin Williams family-comedy, the Kaiser hospital - in Bellflower, CA - where the babies were delivered had four delivery rooms, staffed with a whopping 46 staff members, to deliver each tiny tot. Crazier still: only seven of the babies were anticipated. The eighth was a total bonus baby!
.
The babies were nine weeks early, and delivered via C-section (obviously, consider the alternative!), but the docs say that Mom is resting comfortably and all the babies are doing just fine on ventilators in their wee incubators.
As to why the doctors were surprised by the eighth babe, Dr. Harold Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine at the hospital, adds "It is quite easy to miss a baby when you're anticipating seven babies. Ultrasound doesn't show you everything."
We hope that's a problem we never have to face!
