Charlize Theron Won't Marry Until her Gay Friends Can
Or does she just have commitment issues?
Don't expect wedding bells anytime soon for Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron and her boyfriend of eight years, Stuart Townsend. The two have decided not to get married until everyone, gay or straight, is allowed the same freedom.
"I don't want to get married because right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided," she said in an appearance on The View, "and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights."
"I have so many friends who are gays and lesbians who would so badly want to get married, that I wouldn't be able to sleep with myself," she said.
The issue of inequality runs deep for Theron, who grew up in apartheid-era South Africa where whites and blacks were segregated. This is part of the reason why she is taking a stand against marriage inequality.
"I've already once lived in a country where certain people got certain things and certain people didn't," she said in a previous interview with Moviefone, "and I refuse to live in another country that does that. I will not take part in a ceremony that right now is not available to everybody."
Theron can currently be seen in the drama The Burning Plain, and will star opposite Viggo Mortensen later this year in the post-apocalyptic film, The Road.
