Coldplay Accused of Plagiarism Again
Is it really plagiarism or is it a publicity stunt?
Remember in 2008 when Joe Satriani accused Coldplay of plagiarizing his song "If I Could Fly" with their hit "Viva La Vida"? Well, Coldplay is being accused of plagiarizing yet again; this time by Yusuf Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens.
The funny thing is, Yusuf Islam is coming out with a brand new CD tomorrow. So, is it possible this accusation is just some sort of publicity stunt? Islam is claiming that his song "Foreigner Suite" was actually the inspiration behind Coldplay's "Viva La Vida." He says, "There's been this argument about Coldplay stealing this melody from Joe Satriani, but, if you listen to it, it's mine!"
Yusuf's song, "Foreigner Suite" is an 18-minute song from his 1983 album, Foreigner, and if you ask me, it bares no resemblance to "Viva La Vida." Another interesting piece to the puzzle is that Yusuf actually used Coldplay's mixer, Michael H. Brauer, on his new album and claimed, "He's brilliant. He won a Grammy for their record." If he's so brilliant, why did he allow Coldplay to copy Yusuf?
In any event, Coldplay isn't very interested in getting caught up in the accusations and one of their reps told People, "We have not commented previously about the claims, and there will be no comment about this one.
