Audience-free for a reason?

You know how Craig Ferguson is going to be doing his show without a live audience now? It might not just be some crazy cool idea he and his producers had. It might actually be necessary. Because they can't afford to pay their audience anymore. Yup, pay them.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I actually quite like Craig Ferguson. I think he's funny and off-beat and if given the chance to see him on The Late Late Show, I'd jump on it. Heck, even if I didn't think he was awesome, I wouldn't turn down the opportunity to catch a show of his. But allegedly, Craig Ferguson is having a hard time filling the seats in his audience.

Craig Ferguson kind of explained that he was doing his show sans audience to be like past host Tom Snyder who didn't have an audience. But there might be more to it than that. According to an inside source, "The Craig Ferguson Show is currently using a service for their audience procurement... They have 100 seats, of which 10 are reserved for house guests, and 30-40 members are through requests for tickets. The rest of the seats, about 50-60, are each paid for by the show. At around $20 per person, that's almost $1,000 per hour-long taping, which is one expensive laugh machine." This is opposed to someone like Conan O'Brien who had long lines of people waiting to see his show every night.

This just seems silly to me. If you're not going to see Craig Ferguson already, is $20 really going to change your mind? The source continues by saying, "Why Craig has to pay people to sit through his show is beyond me. It's even more funny that when he stopped, everyone is lauding him for ‘breaking the mold.' He hasn't done anything original! This was a decision based solely on need."

Do you believe this story? Would you see Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show if given the opportunity? Poor Craig Ferguson, I feel bad for the guy!

This is a BS rumor that was started either by radaronline completely making up the story or the "source" they interviewed outright lied. Another news media outlet thought the story stunk and interviewed someone behind the scenes who said they very rarely have to fill any seats...and when they do, it's 10-20 seats. Keep in mind he has the smallest studio, so filling cannot be difficult. Besides, if you really are looking to save money (on a show that already has the smallest budget in late night), then you cut a writer or producer. Craig is awesome and someone is just trying to pee on his experimental show where he interviewed Stephen Fry 1-on-1 with no studio audience. Nice try...but it ain't working.

Utter tripe. Did you even bother to verify this ridiculous accusation before you posted it? Nwzgrl is right -- TLLS rarely has seats to fill, and even then only a handful. And not because they can't find people who want to attend - it's that people who have tickets find they are unable to make it for whatever reason, and in television, you have to have a full house. Nearly all shows like this use professional seat fillers on occasion, so this isn't the scandal it's made out to be. The no-audience episode was Craig's idea (he likes to try new things once in a while -- it's called being clever) and had nothing at all to do with trying to save some money. I don't know if radaronline completely fabricated this specious story or were duped by some "source" with an axe to grind. Either way, some simple common sense would tell you that it is questionable at best, and irresponsible reporting at worst. I'm not sure what's worse, though: radaronline publishing this in the first place, or websites like this that keep repeating it without bothering to even check the facts. I would suggest, if you want stories at limelife.com to be taken seriously, that you remove this story and/or publish a retraction. And then apologize to the good folks at The Late Late Show for having a part in furthering this nonsense.

This story is a pure hype! I have been to 10 tapings of the LLS at various times throughout the year and NEVER were there any PAID members of the audience. Usually there are people turned away because too many showed up. Yes, there is an agency who arranges the tickets but the tickets are ALL free! Craig jokes about the audience-the warm-up guy, Chunky throws out chocolate to the audience and then Craig tosses one to his producer as he walks in to start the show. PAID audiences for Craig are not necessary. He has a very loyal and expanding audience base.

I say right in the article that I like Craig Ferguson and do not believe these accusations to be true! I didn't state anything as fact, just what Radaronline is alleging. I even ask at the end if YOU believe their allegations.

If you don't believe them... verify them! No he doesn't pay his audience at all and no he isn't going to not have an audience. If you took the time to read any of the information when applying for a ticket to the show you'd know this. His seating is for 108 persons. He often has to turn away folks who want to see the show in person because it is such a small venue. Last Tuesday (2-23-10) he decided to change the format of THAT show and not have an audience. It was an experiment so that he could have a candid interview with one person. His numbers are good. I was in the audience on the 24th of Feb.

On the first day of the Journalism 101 class that you never took, you would have been taught to check your sources. And in this case, your 'source" was so ridiculously disreputable to begin with that if you'd had any sense, you wouldn't have even bothered to consider the storyinitially. That you 1) did consider it; 2) went ahead and wrote it; 3) didn't make the slightest effort whatsoever (that's all it would have taken) to confirm it; and 4) then defended your behavior in print --- all of that speaks volumes about whether you should ever, ever again be allowed to write anything for public consumption. Those of us who have even a hint of common sense will never visit this pathetic site again. Good riddance.
