Don't Spy on Your Gym Neighbor
Buying Into the "Healthy Competition" Excuse
Just like I don't like to peek at people's machine displays, I don't agree with working out for the sake of competing with your neighbor. Not only is it extremely awkward, but it makes for that self-conscious gym atmosphere that nobody needs anymore. Do you compete with your treadmill neighbor?
I recently saw a post over at FitSugar advocating using your neighbor as a tool of motivation. At first, it sounds harmless, until you read the description: "look for someone near you who is clearly working it, and try to run a little faster or stay on the machine a little longer than that unsuspecting runner. When they end their run and you're still going, get ready for the sweet taste of victory." Say it with me: creepy!
Don't be that guy or girl at the gym, I beg of you. You don't think that people know you're using someone as a gauge to push yourself, but the person you are surreptitiously watching will--and it's weird. Go for the gym for yourself and use motivational music and new moves to keep you interested: not the people around you. What happens when you go for a solo jog or work out at home if you're constantly using others to push your progress?
Do you like to compete in the gym? Have you ever caught somebody checking out your display or matching your stride when you are running? I think you know where I stand, but I'd like to know what you think about gym competition.
