"G-Force" Pigs Trample "Harry Potter" in Box Office
Little pigs are too much for Harry.
As if Harry Potter didn't have enough trouble with the evil Voldemort trying to destroy him, now he's got another formidable opponent: guinea pigs. G-Force, the new surprise Disney hit, topped Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at this weekend's box office.
In one of the biggest surprises of the summer so far, G-Force toppled the latest Harry Potter installment in an effort that has surprised many industry insiders.
Executives had predicted the film would gross barely $20 million. Instead, it grabbed over $32 million in the U.S. and Canada alone on it's first weekend.
"We knew we had a really good-playing family movie," said Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Group. "But when you're competing against a film like Harry Potter, you can never presume anything."
As it turns out, Harry Potter wasn't much of a competition. Ticket sales declined 61% in its second week in theaters, slipping it behind Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for gross sales in the same period.
