We are lushes, ladies.

Women are hitting the sauce - hard. That according to a recent New York magazine article, which finds that more women are drinking and drinking more.

Researchers are noticing that the number of women who call themselves moderate-to-heavy drinkers has risen in the last ten years, while the number of women who say they're light drinkers has declined. For many, drinking seems to be an conscious choice, a kind of declaration.

"Drinking feels like our prerogative—if we want to get blasted at the company Christmas party or nurse a bottle of scotch through the holidays, no one should, or can, stop us."

A feminist statement? Maybe. While women are increasingly embracing the bottle, men seem to be scaling back. Young, white, middle-class women, specifically, are closing the gender gap when it comes to alcohol consumption.

Why? Aspirations to be like the boys, targeted marketing towards women, and new products may be some of the reasons. Head to nymag.com to read more.
