Jim Carrey's 'Christmas Carol' Chills the Box Office
Movies making money.
Sorry humbugs, but Christmas is here. Taking the top spot at the box office this weekend was A Christmas Carol, a 3D holiday adventure from director Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey. The film pulled in a cool $31 million.
With Jim Carrey as the voice of Ebenezer Scrooge, A Christmas Carol finds director Robert Zemeckis employing the same 3D motion-capture technology that he used to tell Beowulf. And with over $30 million in its opening weekend, it's obvious audiences like what they see.
Finishing in second place this week was Michael Jackson's This Is It with $14 million. The behind-the-scenes rock-doc of Jackson's final concert rehearsals was first place last week, and it still hasn't lost much steam.
Rounding out the top five this week were George Clooney's The Men Who Stare At Goats with $13.3 million, Milla Jovovich's thriller The Fourth Kind with $12.5 million and the newly minted "Most Profitable Film of All Time," Paranormal Activity, with $8.6 million.
In a disappointing sixth place was The Box, Cameron Diaz and James Marsden's thriller about a deadly million dollar decision, which earned only $7.9 million.
