Julia Roberts Got Paid $500K/Minute
Valentine's Day was a piece of cake.
What is wrong with this world? While some people struggle to get by (even in Hollywood), Julia Roberts can grab $3 million for 6 minutes in Valentine's Day, plus 3 percent gross. Does she even still have that kind of pull power, gossip blogs ask? We're wondering that ourselves.
New York Magazine's Vulture reported all the gruesome details about Julia Roberts' paycheck, and it's just as scary as it first seems. Behold:
"New Line Cinema paid Roberts $3 million up front against 3 percent of the gross for what is little more than an extended cameo. That comes out to an astonishing $8,333 per second of screen time, or roughly $500,000 a minute. Verbally, it's a minimum of $11,952 per spoken word."
It's said that Julia Roberts decided to be in the film as a "favor" to Gary Marshall, who delivered her stardom on a silver platter with Pretty Woman, and gave her another boost in Runaway Bride. After Roberts said yes, the magazine reports, other stars "signed on quickly," like Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner, and Bradley Cooper. They were also significantly cheaper than Julia Roberts, and the whole film was made for $50 million.
Are you going to watch Valentine's Day? I am an admittedly sappy rom-com lover, but there is something about this report that rubs me the wrong way. I'll still watch it, but I'll be thinking about that $500K per minute every time Julia Roberts pops up.
In addition, where you surprised that the other big names signed right up for the project after Julia got on board? I didn't know she had that kind of green light power.
