Katie Spotz, 22, Is the Youngest to Ever Row an Ocean
She must have arms of steel.
Katie Spotz knows how to row a boat. After completing a journey that took over two months and spanned nearly 300,000 miles of water, the 22 year-old has become the youngest person to ever row across an entire ocean.
On January 3, Spotz jumped in her rowboat in Dakar, Senegal, in West Africa and started rowing west.
And she was ready for the long-haul -- enough freeze-dried food for 100 days; solar panels that powered a machine that made saltwater drinkable; an Ipod dock so she could listen to audiobooks; GPS and a satellite phone.
Still, the young rower ran into trouble. Her 19-foot rowboat was threatened by 20-foot waves, and at one point, because of strong winds, she had to adjust her course and add an extra 400 miles. She also said it was very difficult to sleep.
Still, she had to push through.
"You’re in a situation that you can't escape," she told the New York Times, "so you really have to dig deep."
Then, 70 days after leaving Senegal, Spotz touched land at Georgetown, Guyana, in South America, and officially became the youngest person to ever row an ocean unassisted.
Even better than the glory of her accomplishment? Spotz's journey also raised $70,000 for the Blue Planet Run Foundation, an organization that helps bring healthy drinking water to different parts of the world.
