Katy Perry is Not a Fashion Designer
Similar name, different profession
Katy Perry's legal team is launching legal action against an Australian fashion designer. Why? Because the designer's name is Katie Perry. It's not exactly the most unique name in the world and it's spelled differently. So is this fair?
Two years ago Australian fashion designer Katie Perry launched her Katie Perry Luxury Loungewear label. In September she filed a trademark application. And last week, she received a letter asking her to stop trading. Now, we understand why it could be worrisome to Katy Perry and her lawyers that someone could be using her name to sell something, but it's the designer's name too! And it's not even spelled the same. How is it this poor girl's fault that she was born with the same name as a singer who has just started to enter the spotlight?
According to the designer Katie Perry, the letter she received basically tried to bully her into signing everything. She says, "It asked me to give up the trademark, withdraw sale of my clothes, withdraw any advertising and any websites, and sign that I will not in the future use a similar trademark to Katy Perry. I pretty much burst into tears."
We don't blame the poor girl! Katie says she's not giving up without a fight and that, "I'm not trying to become a singer. I'm not pretending to be her." We say let the girl be. Just because you become famous, doesn't mean you should bully people into giving up their birth-given names. The musician Katy Perry is set to tour in Australia in August.
