Kirstie Alley Defends Scientology in Interview
She was "ambushed," she says.
Kirstie Alley has a whole lotta opinion these days, and she's not confining herself to Twitter. The actress, who is currently trying to lose weight for personal health reasons (plus her reality show!). After being questioned about her weight loss plan, Organic Liaisons, and its connections to Scientology, Kirstie Alley felt she had to speak out. Cue the exclusive with PopEater.
When on the Today Show, reporter Meredith Vieira asked Kirstie Alley if her Organic Liaison diet plan was connected to Scientology. Denying claims originally made by Hollywood Reporter's Roger Friedman, Kirstie went about bashing the "lies and myths" about Scientology.
"That I need to clarify or defend the intentions of my L.L.C. business corporation, in the year 2010 is indicative of the intolerance that we as a country need to overcome. However, after the Today Show brought fringe bigotry and intolerance into the forefront of the national media, I feel compelled to clarify two issues," she told PopEater.
As for the claims that her company is largely made up on Scientologists? Kirstie says that's simply not true.
"Out of the 25 approximate employees, there may be 26, of Organic Liaison, 4 are Scientologists," she said. "Organic Liaison does not discriminate in its hiring practices, including religion ... It boils down to roughly 10% of my company is Scientologists, 90% are non-Scientologists," Alley added.
Kirstie, who is making the rounds talking about her new show, Kirstie Alley's Big Life, says that her team is made up of the "best people I could find in the world." She maintains that she wasn't aware of her company being questioned, and that the Scientology-related query caught her "off guard."
Do you think that Kirstie has a point? I feel that the show was a perfect chance for her to dispel rumors in a calm and well-mannered way, but she's going to go nutzo on us and ruin her point.
