Laura Zych and Ben Bostic: Love Aboard a Doomed Flight
Love was in the air, then in the water.
When US Airways flight 1549 went down smoothly and safely on the Hudson River almost one year ago, the nation breathed a sigh of relief. The passengers were safe, and tragedy had been averted. But for Laura Zych and Ben Bostic, the story didn't end there. What would follow is a "How We Met" tale you won't soon forget.
Waiting for the famed flight to board at La Guardia airport on January 15, 2009, Ben Bostic noticed a pretty woman getting on to the plane with him. "I would have totally forgotten about it," he would say later to New York Magazine, "if it weren’t for the things that happened."
After taking off, Zych and Bostic's plane would be hit by flying geese, causing the plane to suffer engine failure. Amazingly, Captain Chesley Sullenberger managed to glide the plane onto the surface of the Hudson river, saving the lives of everyone on board.
As the passengers were gathered for interviews a month later, Bostic and Zych finally met during a reunion on the set of 60 Minutes. Then, a few months later, another passenger hosted a survivor's party, and the two met again. After talking, Bostic had to leave for another party, but Zych and a friend persuaded him to come back and let him "crash" at their place for the night.
"I didn't think of it until the next day," said Bostic, "but it was the second time I crashed with them."
That night Zych and Bostic hit it off and ended up talking until dawn. "I had to work the next day," Bostic said. "And I didn't care! At that time, that's exactly what I wanted to do."
The rest, of course, was history. Bostic and Zych have been dating ever since, and every night they try to remember how close they were to losing everything. Before going to bed, they make sure to dance to their favorite music.
"We do that as part of our decompressing and loving life," says Zych. "Just so that your day ends on a good note."
