Lauren Bacall, Roger Corman Win Early Oscars
And the early Oscar goes to...
The Oscar season has officially begun, and three of Tinsel Town's most respected players have received early Oscars. At an off-camera ceremony on Saturday night, screen legend Lauren Bacall, B-movie master Roger Corman and cinematographer Gordon Willis were each awarded Academy Awards.
Without all the hoopla of the big Oscar show surrounding the evening, the guests were free to enjoy the intimate setting. "It's so much better," said actor Warren Beatty, "that nobody's worrying whether 36.5 million people are watching us or 29.2."
Among those in attendance were Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Annette Bening, Morgan Freeman, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Quentin Tarantino.
For Corman, 83, a popular B-movie director and producer of films like Bloody Mama and X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes "The movie lovers of planet earth thank you," he said., director Quentin Tarantino only had praise.
Anjelica Huston presented the award to Lauren Bacall, saying the legendary screen actress "defines what it means to be a great actress and also a huge movie star." Huston praised Bacall's "steadfastness, honesty and extraordinary beauty."
If all this sounds too exciting to have missed, fear not. Portions will be shown during the real deal, which airs on March 7th, 2010.
