Let The Madness Begin!
Mad Men inspires a new era of women to wear stockings.
It's official. We're mad for Mad Men, the AMC drama about a 1960's fictional NYC advertising firm, and the people that fill its well-designed halls. The storylines are compelling, and the time period is rife with drama, but it's the clothes that have us swooning. We want to dress like mid-century women! Pencil skirts, silk stockings, elbow-length gloves, brooches, pocketbooks, the list goes on. (If 2008 is the new 1960, we need a fake fur stole.)
Janie Bryant, the costume designer behind the madness, is a veteran in the field and holds an Emmy for her work on Deadwood (another costume drama), but says this experience has been the most fun to-date. Pulling most of her pieces from vintage stores, and designing the rest herself, she's sparked a major fashion moment. Even Michael Kors credited Mad Men as the inspiration for his latest collection. Could a return to elegant dressing mark the death of Juicy sweat suits?
