Biography
Kate Noelle (Katie) Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 18, 1978 to Martin and Kathleen Holmes, a lawyer and philanthropist respectively. She has four older siblings: sisters Tamera, Holly Ann and Nancy, and brother Martin.
Holmes attended Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls school for high school and began her acting career in plays and musicals performed at the nearby all-male school St. John's Jesuit. During high school, she began taking modeling classes and soon attended the International Modeling and Talent Association Competition in New York City where she found an agent.
In 1997, Holmes landed her first professional role, as Libbets Casey, in The Ice Storm co-starring Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline. It was later that year that producer and writer Kevin Williamson asked her to audition for his new show on The WB, Dawson's Creek. Holmes was performing in her school play and refused to miss it so she sent an audition tape instead. Holmes got the part that would forever change her life. She was cast as Joey Potter, the lead character's best friend.
Dawson's Creek became a smash hit for The WB and Holmes and her co-stars became instant stars. The cast included James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams, Kerr Smith, and Meredith Monroe. During the show, Holmes appeared on the covers of Rolling Stone, Seventeen, and TV Guide. The show was a huge success and ran from 1998 to 2003. She was the only cast member to appear in all 128 episodes. During the first few seasons, Holmes dated co-star Joshua Jackson. They parted amicably and remain good friends.
During the 6 years of filming for Dawson's Creek, Holmes filmed several movies on the side. In 1998, she won a role in the thriller, Disturbing Behavior, co-starring James Marsden and Nick Stahl. In early 1999, she starred in the ensemble film, Go, alongside Scott Wolf, Jay Mohr, Jane Krakowski, Sarah Polley, Taye Diggs, and William Fichtner. Later that same year, Kevin Williamson cast Holmes in his directorial debut, Teaching Mrs. Tingle. She co-starred with Helen Mirren and Barry Watson.
In 2000, Holmes met actor Chris Klein and the two dated for several years before getting engaged in late 2003.
Over the next three years, Holmes starred in several more films. In 2000, she starred in Wonder Boys with Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, and Robert Downey Jr. and The Gift with Cate Blanchett, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, and Giovanni Ribisi. In 2002, Holmes starred in another thriller, Abandon, with Benjamin Bratt and Zooey Deschanel. And in 2003, she starred in three films: Phone Booth with Colin Farrell which was her highest grossing movie to date, The Singing Detective with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr., and independent film Pieces of April. In 2004, she also starred in the teen-friendly flick, First Daughter with Michael Keaton.
2005 was an eventful year for Holmes. She and Klein called off their engagement in the early part of the year and within weeks, she was linked to the mega-star Tom Cruise. Their first appearance together was in April at an Italian awards show. The following month, on May 23, Cruise and Holmes appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. This visit included Cruise's infamous couch-jumping incident. A month later, on June 17, Cruise and Holmes got engaged at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Towards the end of 2005, it was confirmed that Katie Holmes was pregnant.
Holmes also starred in two movies that year: the hugely-anticipated superhero movie, Batman Begins, in 2005 opposite Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Liam Neeson and Thank You for Smoking co-starring Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, Rob Lowe, and William H. Macy.
Holmes and Cruise had a daughter, Suri Cruise, on April 18, 2006. After weeks of avoiding photographers, the pair unveiled the first pictures of Suri in the October issue of Vanity Fair. Later that year, Holmes and Cruise got married. They were married on November 18, 2006 in Bracciano, Italy and they honeymooned in the Maldives.
After a three-year break, Holmes returned to the screen in 2008 in the comedy Mad Money co-starring Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah. She also guest-starred on the ABC series Eli Stone with Jonny Lee Miller. Holmes made her Broadway debut this same year in the revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. She received mixed reviews.
In 2009, Holmes performed on the hit reality show So You Think You Can Dance. Her performance included singing and dancing. Her appearance garnered lots of press.
Holmes is currently working on two films due out in 2010 and 2011 respectively: The Extra Man with Kevin Kline and John C. Reilly and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark with Guy Pearce.
