Biography
Lindsay Dee Lohan was born in New York City, New York on July 2, 1986 to Michael and Dina Lohan. She grew up on Long Island with her three younger siblings, Michael Jr., Ali, and Dakota. Her parents have separated, reunited, separated again, and finally divorced in 2007. Her father has been to jail three times: for stock fraud, a probation violation, and for violating an order of protection preventing him from seeing his children.
Lohan began her career in show business at age 3 when she joined Ford Models. From there, she was featured in over 100 print ads for companies like Toys R Us, Abercrombie Kids, and Calvin Klein Kids. She also went on to star in over 60 TV commercials including spots for Jell-O, Pizza Hut, and Wendy's. It wasn't long before she landed a starring role on Another World.
.
Her big breakthrough came in 1998 when film director Nancy Meyers hand-selected Lohan for the lead role in the Disney remake of The Parent Trap co-starring Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson. The film made over $92 million worldwide making the family film a success. Lohan received an abundance of praise for her portrayal of the lead character. She went on to make a few more films for Disney in the next two years, both for TV: Life-Size with Tyra Banks and 2002's Get a Clue.
Lohan's biggest box office success was her 2003 film Freaky Friday. Another Disney remake, she starred opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in the story of a girl and her mother who switch bodies and lives. The filmed earned over $160 million and Lohan enjoyed critical praise. She also recorded the closing theme for the movie, Ultimate. It was around this time that Lohan started dating That ‘70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama. The two broke up at the end of 2004.
2004 was a busy year for Lohan. She filmed two movies and released her first album. It was clear Lohan was going to be a double threat in both music and acting. Lohan's first film of the year was Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen with Megan Fox. Her second film, Mean Girls, written by Tina Fey, was a much bigger success. Her first non-Disney film, it was rated PG-13 and helped establish Lohan as a real teen presence in Hollywood. She also released her first album that year, Speak, which included the single Rumors. The single would eventually win the #1 spot on MTV's Total Request Live and the album went gold.
.
After her early success, Lohan soon began having some difficulties. Her next two films, Herbie: Fully Loaded and Just My Luck did poorly at the box office and were plagued with stories of her on-set antics. The paparazzi began following and chronicling her nightly visits to clubs. 2005 was also the year her second album was released. It eventually went gold as well.
In 2006 and 2007, her troubles continued. Though Lohan was cast in several independent films opposite some renowned film legends, her personal life overshadowed her performances. It wasn't long before she was labeled as a problem actress and struggling to get roles. In 2006 she was cast in Emilio Estevez' directorial debut, Bobby opposite Sharon Stone. She received some good reviews. Next, she starred in A Prairie Home Companion opposite Meryl Streep. Again, her tardiness and off-set antics overshadowed the film and her role in it. Her last film of 2006, Chapter 27, failed to find a distributer and only had a limited release.
Around this time it became extremely difficult for Lohan to land roles. However, in 2006, she was cast in the drama Georgia Rule opposite Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman. During filming, she was publicly reprimanded by the CEO of the film production company, James Robinson, for her late arrivals, absences, and overall bad behavior.
.
Lohan's off-set bad behavior continued to plague her. Her many car accidents in 2006 and 2007 were widely covered in the tabloids. On two occasions that summer, she was involved in two separate driving incidents including driving under the influence and drugs found in her vehicle. In 2007, Lohan checked into rehab three separate times to Wonderland Center, Promises Treatment Center, and Cirque Lodge Treatment Center. After her last rehab stint, she served 84 minutes in jail for her last driving infraction. Her last film of 2007, I Know Who Killed Me, made only $9 million at the box office.
Her only work in 2008, Lohan guest-starred on Ugly Betty for a four-episode arc. In 2009, she co-starred in the ABC Family movie Labor Pains with Cheryl Hines. She was also cast in Robert Rodriguez 2010 movie Machete. She's also attached to two other 2010 films, The Other Side and Dare to Love Me.
.
Lohan began being romantically linked to Samantha Ronson in 2008. The very dramatic relationship has been followed and covered in the weekly tabloid magazines and on daily blogs. The two broke up in April 2009 but have since reconciled.
In addition to her acting and singing, Lohan was also the face of several fashion designer campaigns. She was featured in ads for Jill Stuart, Miu Miu, and Dooney and Burke. She also launched a leggings line named 6126 in honor of her hero Marilyn Monroe's birthday. Lohan famously recreated Monroe's famous last shoot for the New Yorker in 2008. In 2009, she also released a self-tanning spray called Sevin Nyne with Sephora.
