Biography

Miley Ray Cyrus was born in Nashville, Tennessee on November 23, 1992 to Billy Ray Cyrus and Leticia (Tish) Finley Cyrus. Miley's birth name was actually Destiny Hope Cyrus but in May 2008 she legally changed it to Miley Ray - her middle name a nod to her father. Miley was a nickname she got as a kid after everyone called her "Smiley." It was shortened to Miley and it stuck.

Miley has five siblings: an older brother Trace who is in the pop/rock band Metro Station and an older sister named Brandi, both from a previous relationship Tish had; a half brother Cody Christopher, and two younger siblings that share her same mom and dad, Braison and Noah.

Cyrus first became interested in the world of singing and acting when she was just 9. Her first gig was on her father's TV show Doc. She also had a small role in Tim Burton's movie, Big Fish. Cyrus was 12 years old when she landed the dream role of Hannah Montana. Producers first thought she was too small, but she was determined to get it and eventually won the title role. (She also auditioned for the role of the "best friend.")

Following the success of the Disney show, Walt Disney Records released a Hannah Montana soundtrack in 2006 that was the 8th top-selling album that year. A year later on June 26, 2007, Cyrus released Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus. The double album, one disk featured Hannah Montana soundtrack songs while the other was Miley Cyrus' debut album, debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. The album went on to be three times platinum.

In late 2007 and early 2008, Cyrus headlined the North American Best of Both Worlds Tour. The Jonas Brothers opened for a majority of the shows. Parts of the tour were taped, repackaged, and released in theaters in Disney Digital 3-D. It was also then broadcast on the Disney Channel.

In 2008 Cyrus released a second album entitled Breakout on which she co-wrote most of the songs. The album debuted at #1 again with her single 7 Things topping the charts at #7. Later that year she co-hosted the CMT Awards with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus.

2009 has been a big year for Cyrus. Her autobiography, Miles to Go, was released in March. And following the success of the Hannah Montana television show, Hannah Montana: The Movie was released on April 10, 2009 grossing almost $150 million worldwide to date. She has also announced dates for her 2009 North American Tour beginning on September 14, 2009. A Wal-Mart exclusive album will be released on August 31 to coincide with her clothing line debut in the store. Miley is also getting ready to film The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks.

Cyrus' life hasn't been without drama. She's had several scandalous photos leaked onto the internet for which she's had to publicly acknowledge and apologize. Soon after the first photo leak, famed photographer Annie Leibovitz photographed Cyrus for Vanity Fair. Some of the photos show her with just a bed sheet and parents and Disney were a bit shocked. Cyrus ended up issuing another public apology.

Cyrus's love life has been in the public eye as well. Her on and off-again romance with Joe Jonas is highly publicized. She also dated Justin Gaston which raised eyebrows as he was 19 and she was just 15.
