Biography
Selena Marie Gomez was born in New York, New York on July 22, 1992 to Ricardo Gomez and Mandy Teefy Cornett. Her mother, a former actress, was 16 years old when she gave birth to the future Disney star. Her parents named her Selena after the famous Mexican singer Selena. When Gomez was young, her parents got divorced and her mother remarried in 2006 to Brian Teefy.
Gomez got into acting when she was 7 years old - she landed the role of Gianna on the children's show Barney & Friends. She stayed on the show for two years. Soon after that, she got two more small roles in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over starring Antonio Banderas and the made-for-tv movie Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire.
Her big break came in 2004 when she attended an open casting for the Disney Channel. Before landing her own show, Gomez guest-starred on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Hannah Montana. It wasn't long before she was cast as one of the lead characters, Alex Russo, on Wizards of Waverly Place.
2008 was a big year for Gomez. She appeared in the sequel of Hilary Duff's film Cinderella Story, Another Cinderella Story with fellow Disney star Drew Seeley. The straight-to-DVD movie made its television debut to over 5 million viewers making it the number one cable movie that month. That same year, she recorded several songs-some for the Another Cinderella Story soundtrack and some for DisneyMania 8. Gomez also signed with Hollywood Records with her first album due out in late 2009.
In between her TV show, movies, and record deal, Gomez also found time for philanthropy. She's done work for St. Judes's Children's Hospital, Borden Milk, Unicef, UR Votes Count, RAISE Hope for Congo, and Disney's Friends for Change.
Gomez hasn't slowed down in 2009 either. She starred in another Disney Channel movie Princess Protection Program with best friend Demi Lovato as well as recorded songs for the soundtrack. She also recorded several songs for the Wizards of Waverly Place soundtrack and a song with the group Forever the Sickest Kids. She's also been working on her debut album Kiss and Tell.
Many tabloid magazines have speculated on Gomez's dating life. She was linked to Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers for a while and most recently was photographed with Twilight Saga star Taylor Lautner.
