M.I.A. Insults Twilight and Lady Gaga
Double ouch.
M.I.A. doesn't care what people think about her, and she'll insult anyone she feels like. The heavily political performer spoke out against Lady Gaga and Twilight in a recent interview, giving them more than the standard brush-off. Someone was feeling prickly!
M.I.A. called Lady Gaga a "mimic" and said that her record label boss wasn't pleased about the Twilight people inquiring about a musical contribution.
The U.K.-based M.I.A. says that there are a lot of comparisons made between her and Gaga, but she doesn't like them. They're mostly superficial, she explained.
"There's GaGa - people say we're similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same. None of her music's reflective of how weird she wants to be. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like a 20-year-old Ibiza disco.
She's not progressive, but she's a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I f***ing do," she said.
M.I.A. thinks that Lady Gaga's too corporate, and that she doesn't represent the same things that artists like M.I.A. do.
"She's got a great team behind her, but she's the industry's last stab at making itself important - saying, ‘you need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums.' Respect to her, she's kept a thousand people working, but my belief is Do-It-Yourself."
As for that Twilight snub? M.I.A. explained that the chairman of her U.S. label "stepped in and told them to f**k off," "luckily."
Do you think that M.I.A.'s shooting herself in the foot here? I don't. Her work is far more politically charged and independent, and by giving interviews like this, she's emphasizing that even further. Lady Gaga is nothing near Grace Jones, and never will be. They are on different planets! I'm a little scared of the Twilight bash, though-- for M.I.A.'s safety's sake.
