Matthew Weiner Inks a "Mad" Deal
Now, if only Don Drapper would follow suit.
If you're like me and worship at the neatly starched, pressed, and cocktailed alter of AMC's Mad Men, you can breathe a sigh of relief: show creator/runner Matthew Weiner has signed on for the show's third season with parent-company, Lionsgate.
But that's not all. He is also locked into the fourth season (out of the five seasons he promises the show arcs), and there is a component of the new contract for the possibility of a feature project. The seven-figure deal with Lionsgate is said to be bolstered by financing by AMC, who are relishing the critical acclaim and praise that the show has been showered with since debuting in 2007.
Though its ratings have never been great (by American Idol standards, anyway), it's great to see that the passionate creator (Weiner wrote and nurtured the show for seven years before it was greenlit) wins out when the standard model of TV is that numbers rule over all. There's just no one else that can make us enjoy the misery of late-60s Madison Avenue and the girdles that come with it!
Now, if FOX leaves Dollhouse alone long enough for it to find an audience, we'll almost forgive the cancellation of Pushing Daisies. Yes, I know that those are all on different networks/channels, but it's all the same faceless exec pulling the plug to me.
