Michael Jackson is Most Searched, Beats Lady Gaga and Britney Spears
People are hungry for information.
The King of Pop can still wear his crown. The major search engines -- Google, Yahoo and Bing -- have revealed that Michael Jackson finished at the top of internet searches for 2009, ending Britney Spears' four-year reign.
Michael Jackson's death in June caused people around the world to flock to news sites in search of accurate information. Overall, worldwide web traffic jumped 11% when the King of Pop passed. This pushed him past the then-most searched term, Barack Obama.
"When the news of Michael Jackson's death came out the traffic was overwhelming, and surpassed that," said web trend analyst Vera Chan. "And then his case was ruled a homicide, so it's an ongoing crime investigation. His death is unresolved," she added.
The spike in traffic was so high right after news broke of MJ's death that Google actually thought it was under attack.
On Yahoo, the second most popular search term was "Twilight," followed by wrestling organization "WWE," Transformers star "Megan Fox," singer "Britney Spears," and the "Naruto" manga comics. Other popular terms were "American Idol," "Kim Kardashian," and "Nascar."
Google also looked at whose Twitter accounts were being most searched for. Apparently web surfers looked for Miley Cyrus' Twitter account the most, followed by those of Lance Armstrong and Taylor Swift.
