Oprah Winfrey In Defamation Lawsuit Over Sex Abuse
Oprah Winfrey caught in middle over sex abuse claims at African school.
In 2007 a shocking report hit the press that an administrator at Oprah Winfrey's South African school for girls had covered up sex abuse that allegedly happened to some of the girls at the school. Oprah Winfrey made a public apology on the school's behalf and slammed the school's headmistress, but now Oprah may get sued for defamation, as the court date's been set.
The Oprah Winfrey defamation trial will kick off on March 29 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A Philadelphia judge has determined that the school's former headmistress Nomvuyo Mzamane has enough evidence to bring a case against Oprah for the remarks Oprah made about Mzamane after the scandal broke loose. Mzamane was placed on temporary paid leave from her job after the situation broke, and then it sounds as though she was dismissed.
Mzamane's lawyer filed for a lawsuit in 2008 after Oprah Winfrey said this about his client in a rare television moment: Oprah said Mzamane was "untrustworthy, failed the students of the academy, did not care about the students at the academy, knew of alleged physical and sexual abuse at the academy and participated in a cover-up of the alleged abuse." Oprah provided professional psychological counseling for the students to discuss what they'd experienced.
