It's the oddest celebrity pairing since "Dancing with the Stars" auditioned David Hasselhoff. (So, okay, in a week. Hey, Hollywood's a wacky place.) Get this: Robert Pattinson and Kate Gosselin were seen sharing a moment together at Jimmy Fallon's Emmys party -- what in the world could they have in common?!

Besides careers worth multi-millions, probably not much. While we know recent Pattinson co-star Reese Witherspoon has kids who are crazy for Cullen, we don't exactly get the Gosselin connection...but here's what we're told about Kate Gosselin's run-in with Robert Pattinson at Jimmy Fallon's Emmys afterparty at trendy Trousdale in West Hollywood.

Sounds like Gosselin's the one who pursued Pattinson -- but she didn't get her cougar on. An alleged party attendee has told our pals at Hollywood Life, "Rob did have a brief discussion with Kate ... He was sitting with his guy friends, Jimmy [Fallon] and [agent] Stephanie Ritz, and she came up to chat to him and Jimmy briefly. It was very innocent."

We have yet to hear what the contents of the discussion were, but we are so weirded out to learn that two of the most superlative stars in modern onscreen history actually made contact with each other!
