It's so sad that Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet have decided to break up, with two children and a close working relationship in the mix. What we didn't know is that they were actually going through a trial separation last year, and that they are now calling it quits.

Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet took a break while Kate was filming Revolutionary Road with Leonardo DiCaprio, sources say. They later got back together to try to reconcile, but it was too much for the couple.

"Working and living together was incredibly intense and basically overwhelmed their relationship," a source told the Daily Mirror.

"The pair have a very different work ethos - Sam wanted to switch off after a long day and Kate liked to analyze every nuance of her performance. It was just too much," the source continued.

After deciding to do less work last year to concentrate on family, Sam and Kate reportedly went "stir crazy" behind closed doors, fighting over small projects while trying to keep it together for the kids. If you were shocked about the separation, though, word has it that the two have been apart for some time.

"They have been living separately for a while. There had been some huge fights behind closed doors before they decided to formally separate. Kate is devastated. She thought their marriage was forever," reported an insider.

I read a lot of speculation today and yesterday that Kate Winslet has a thing for Leonardo. Is that pushing it, or can I let my '90s teen dream run wild?
