Should Jon and Kate Gosselin Keep Reality Show Going?
Jon & Kate Plus Eight may have trouble holding on to some of its fans now that its stars, Jon and Kate Gosselin, have filed for divorce. While Jon Gosselin says the hugely popular reality TV program will continue, with the former couple taking turns caring for the children, some previously diehard supporters say the show should NOT go on.
Karyn Speakman, a rabid fan who sits down with her husband to watch each week and dissects the show's episodes with her sister and a friend, told the Associated Press: "No child should have to go through this in the public eye ... "On the one hand, you could say that divorce is a big part of society, and maybe someone can learn from this. But I think we can learn enough from the people around us. I mean, look at the divorce rate." Another fan reportedly wrote to show's blog: "I was as young as 6 when my parents divorced and it would've been so much worse if the aftermath of it all was at millions of people's hands. STOP doing the show it was great but now it's just another depressing statistic." The program chronicling the lives of the Gosselins, parents of twins and sextuplets, has been put on hiatus after weeks of infidelity rumours and tabloid warring that culminated in the couple filing for divorce on Monday. "I really looked up to them," Speakman said. "They seemed to have a very faith-based marriage. That's something I admire. I think they're good people, but I think they've gone a little off track. It's really disheartening." Speakman said her husband, Rich, "thinks they're doing this breakup for publicity and ratings .... And he thinks they'll get back together again to make the ratings go up." Network TLC has vowed to support the family through its transition.
