'Spectacular Spider-Man' May Lose in Disney-Marvel Deal
Say it aint so, Spidey!
Perhaps the first casualty of the massive merger between Disney and Marvel has finally surfaced. Spectacular Spiderman, a fan favorite on Disney's XD channel, is reportedly on the chopping block.
According to the show's producer, Grag Weisman, Sony has relinquished its rights to the television show and will not continue producing the series. This leaves the show in a very precarious position.
"If Disney XD decides they don't want any episodes, it's no longer likely that we'd shop the series around to XD's competitors," said Weisman. "So any decision [about future episodes of 'Spectacular'] begins at XD, I would think. And before you ask, no, nobody at Disney has talked to me about the series."
Sony actually owns the film right's to the Spiderman franchise, and Spectacular Spiderman's cancellation may just be the first step in a battle over them between the two huge production companies.
For those who've never seen the show, it follows a more traditional Spidey storyline like the one created by Stan Lee way back in the early '60s. It follows Peter Parker as he struggles to deal with being a superhero and a teenager all at the same time.
The show has garnered a cult following, with many die-hard comic book fans calling it one of the best cartoon adaptations ever made.
