Student Wearing "Enjoy Vagina" T-Shirt Sent Home From School -- Justified?
Says It Won't Deter Her From Wearing Other Controversial Shirts
Even though the word "vagina" is a biological term, not a curse word, a 15 year-old girl from Queens was ordered to go home and change after coming to school in a top that school officials found inappropriate. Riffing on the popular "Enjoy Coke" slogan and artwork, Briana Demato's t-shirt proclaimed "Enjoy Vagina."
After she showed up in the shirt and word started to spread, Demato was sent to the principal's office and told she had two options: change or go home. Refusing to change clothes, she left.
Demato, who says she identifies as bisexual, claims the move was ridiculous on since teachers at Newton High School use the term when teaching biology. "It's hypocritical," said Brianna, who insisted she's worn the flirty shirt to school dozens of times without incident. "They use the word in class - why can't I, on a shirt?"
Her mom agrees. "They're discriminating against Brianna. They pulled her out of class for nothing," seethed the elder Demato, 39. "She's not hurting anyone. It's her right to wear that shirt."

Her mom also states her daughter won't be deterred by the incident. “(Wednesday) she’s wearing a shirt that says ‘I’m the B---h From Down the Block,’ ” her mom said. “The message is, she can wear whatever she wants.”
Still, the school defends its move. "The language on the shirt was likely to cause disruption and the language is inappropriate for school," said spokeswoman Margie Feinberg.
We're on the fence here. Yes, the shirt has potential to be jarring and disruptive, but the language on it technically isn't foul. Plus, she does have the right to freedom of expression.
Do you agree with the school's decision to send her home?
