Sugar Ray Attempting a Comeback!
They just wanna fly.
Remember Sugar Ray? No, not the boxer. The singer. The band, fronted by singer and hottie Mark McGrath, disappeared for a bit, but now they're coming back with a new album!
They were at the top of the charts in the mid-90s. The band from Newport Beach with hits like "Fly" and "Every Morning." Their last album, In Pursuit of Leisure, was released in 2003 and they've barely been heard from since. But now the band has announced that they'll be releasing a new album, Music for Cougars, in July of this year. The band will also be touring clubs and festivals this summer.
Lead singer Mark McGrath has been keeping busy acting as the host of Extra for the last couple years, while still performing with Sugar Ray at corporate functions and small parties. All of the group's original members are still with Sugar Ray, including Craig "DJ Homicide" Bullock, drummer Stan Frazier, bassist Murphy Karges and guitarist Rodney Sheppard.
Sugar Ray was approached by producer Josh Abraham who suggested they try making an album on a low budget just for fun to see what would come of it. McGrath says of the new album, ""We got together 21 years ago to make music and have fun and that was always the passion behind the band. I left Extra in September and focused full time on the band and making this record. It's purely a passion, a labor of love basically making this record."
Music for Cougars is going to contain the traditional summery, fun Sugar Ray sound their fans had come to love. The first single, appropriately titled "Boardwalk" is due out in May.
McGrath also said, "I know people aren't sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for a Sugar Ray record." But who knows, he might be very wrong about that assertion! And here's to hoping non-cougars can enjoy Sugar Ray's new album too.
