Surprise (Not): Many 'Real Housewives' Are 'Real' Broke (POLL)

Foreclosures, Bankruptcies, Divorces and Even a Car Repossession Are Among the Financial Realities of the Real Housewives Stars

Reality TV can be harsh; the real world is proving to be even harsher for some of the stars of Bravo's Real Housewives series.

The new issue of In Touch magazine, as reported by Celebitchy.com, features a cover story on the nearly one dozen stars of the Real Housewives franchise who are going through major financial troubles in real life, despite the luxury lifestyles and excesses they flaunt on reality TV.

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice, the most notoriously broke RH-er of all, is the magazine's cover girl, though Celebitchy reports that her story is missing from the rundown of broke Real Housewives stars inside the In Touch issue. Maybe they figure we're all seeing the Giudice's woes play out on air, so there's no need to chronicle them in print? Or, more likely, it's because Giudice gives frequent interviews to the magazine.

But there's no reprieve for the other Real Housewives women from In Touch, including, Celebitchy reports, Real Housewives of Orange County stars Peggy Tanous (whose $1.3 million house is in foreclosure), Alexis Bellino (who had to sell her McMansion at a loss to avoid foreclosure), Tamra Barney (who had to downsize from a house to a small apartment for her and her three children), Gretchen Rossi (whose boyfriend Slade is jobless and owes more than $100,000 in child support) and former RH-er Lynne Curtin, whose family was evicted from their home as we all sat in our living rooms and watched in horror. (She had enough cash to spring for mommy-daughter plastic surgeries but didn't pay the mortgage? Nice lesson to teach your kids.)

And the list doesn't end there.

Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes is facing a major downsizing in what is promising to be a messy divorce from husband Gregg; her castmate Sheree Whitfield reportedly had her car repossessed after she neglected to pay her divorce attorneys more than $100,000; and former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Lisa Wu Hartwell lost her $2.9 million home to foreclosure in 2009.

Then there's Real Housewives of New York City star Sonja Morgan's $7 million debt, RH of DC star Michaele Salahi, who's been sued 17 times and whose winery is now bankrupt and, perhaps most embarrassing of all, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong, who reportedly had her credit card declined at Starbucks!

Geez … if she can't even afford to pony up cash for a Frappuccino, that impending divorce from cold fish hubby Russell (who filed bankruptcy five years ago and has been sued several times) probably isn't going to leave her in a good financial state. (And, what will happen when her lips begin to deflate?)

Take Our Poll

Does knowing about their ACTUAL reality make watching the reality TV lives of the "Real Housewives" stars less fun?

  1. Kinda. It's one thing to suspect the shows aren't real, it's another thing to KNOW it.
  2. No. Anyone who thinks any reality show is real needs a dose of, well, reality.

Michaele Salahi never owned a winery. She worked at her husband's parent's winery. She helped bankrupt it by working with her husband so siphon funds off of it to fund their lavish lifestyle.
