The Boss, Dirty Harry Get Dissed - Oscar Snubs
Gettin' no love from the Academy.
I've had some time to reflect on last week's Oscar nominations, time to really work myself into a frenzy over who did and did not get nominated.
While many of the nominations were well deserved, there were some glaring oversights that have left me smarting. Here, in my opinion, are the most atrocious non-nominations.
Woody Allen not getting nominated for Best Original Screenplay for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. This was some of Allen's best writing in years, lines brought terrifically to life by Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson and the wonderful Penelope Cruz.
It was no surprise The Boss took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Springsteen's "The Wrestler" captured the aching sadness and sputtering hope of the film with absolute musical precision. It's a huge snub, and an even bigger mistake, that the Academy chose not to nominate him.
After taking home the Best Actress award at the Golden Globes, Sally Hawkins wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for her work in Happy-Go-Lucky. Both she, and Kristin Scott Thomas (I've Loved You So Long), who gave complicated, interesting performances were thrown over for the likes of Angelina Jolie, who gave a touching but ultimately boring performance (The Changeling).
The Dark Knight felt Oscar's cold shoulder in the Best Picture and Best Director category. I actually didn't expect the Academy to nominate the film for Best Pic, but did think they'd acknowledge Christopher Nolan for his directorial turn. If for no other reason than because a big name nomination usually means more viewers on Oscar night.
While we're on the Best Director topic, I'm rather disheartened Darren Aronofsky didn't receive a nomination for The Wrestler. Both he, and the film as a whole, deserved nods from the Academy.
Despite a lot of Oscar buzz, and a Best Actor win from the National Board of Review, Clint Eastwood failed to receive a nomination for any of his work in Gran Torino (directing or acting). Maybe the Academy thought a gun-toting Clint was nothing new, but this was Eastwood's best performance in years.
