The Westminster Dog Show 2010 Howls into NYC

Which breed will be crowned champion?

New York City is being overrun by dogs. The 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show kicks off at Madison Square Garden Monday night, and the world will be watching for what it takes to be the world's greatest canines.

Judging more than 2500 dogs from over 150 breeds, the Westminster Dog Show has been held since 1877 and is the second-oldest sporting event in the United Staes (behind the Kentucky Derby).

Every year the world's most perfectly groomed canines gather at Madison Square Garden to see who will be crowned Best in Show.

Of course, most people watching just want to see all the crazy breeds. From common dogs like spaniels, English setters,  Shis Tzus and German shepherds, to Canaans (the national dog of Israel), Polish lowland sheepdogs, keeshonds (seen above), Belgian sheepdogs and wirehaired pointing griffons, the competition has some unusual looking dogs.

"That's one of the things people love about Westminster," Lisa Peterson of the American Kennel Club told the NYDaily News. "They can go to the [backstage] area and see dogs they don't normally see."
