WATCH! David Beckham's Injury Boots Him From World Cup
Beckham's weekend injury leads to his worst nightmare.
David Beckham was playing soccer for A.C. Milan this past weekend when he sustained an injury that rocked his Achilles tendon. While early reports suggested the injury was minor, international football officials, World Cup execs and ortopedics pros are confirming that Beckham won't see the World Cup this year, which would have been his last.
A.C. Milan was about to win 1-0 against Chievo on Sunday when Beckham twisted his foot into a strange position and spontaneously tore the tendon that connects his heel to the muscles in his lower leg. It appears Becks tried to continue kicking before finally collapsing on the ground -- watch our video to see how it happened.
It doesn't appear that Beckham had any opposing players surrounding him at the time, but the move could be fatal to his career. Orthopedic specialists are speculating that Beckham's recovery could take more than six months which would leave him out of this summer's World Cup. The 2010 World Cup happens in June and takes place only ever four years. This was expected to be 34-year-old Beckham's last World Cup play.
World Cup organizers are devastated as Beckham was to be a major draw to the Cup in South Africa, especially for American fans. It's said Americans are reacting disappointedly to Beckham's injury, as his A.C. Milan injury took place while he was "on loan" from American Major League Soccer's L.A. Galaxy.
Beckham was snapped Monday morning carrying crutches as he climbed off a plane in Finland for Achilles tendon surgery. Stay with LimeLife for updates as we wish David Beckham a speedy recovery.
