We Remember Don LaFontaine

Coming to a graveyard near you.

In a world where men and women sit in dark theaters captivated by action-packed movie trailers, he was king. The voice behind the voiceover, Don LaFontaine, died Monday. He was 68.

Throughout the history of promos, his was the voice that resonated above all other voices. For years we heard, but never saw, this Baron of Baritone. Then that changed with a Geico commercial. Humankind was witness to LaFontaine playing himself, "that announcer guy from the movies." And, boy, was he ever.

LaFontaine voiced more than 5,000 trailers in his 33-year career, and coined "In a world where ...," which became his trademark phrase. From Terminator to 24 to Adam Slutsky's voicemail, Don left his unique vocal imprint on pop culture (and people's answering machines).

In memoriam, we thought we'd post this video, a compilation of Don's greatest hits. R.I.P., Don. We're sure Heaven sounds richer tonight.
